Tips for Your Jewish Wedding / Bar Bat Mitzvah / Anniversary

1. Choosing a Date

Jewish weddings are generally prohibited on Shabbat and festivals--including Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot--and the fast days Tisha B'Av, the 10th of Tevet, the 17th of Tammuz, the Fast of Gedaliah, and the Fast of Esther. Traditionally, Jewish weddings are not held during the counting of the omer between Passover and Shavuot, although customs differ as to whether that entire seven-week stretch or just part of it is a problem. Marrying during the three weeks between the 17th of Tammuz and Tisha B'Av is also prohibited in traditional Jewish practice. Because many of these dates fall during prime wedding season (spring-summer), it's important to check an accurate Jewish calendar (such as www.hebcal.com) before you select a date.

We recommend calling our agents and we can either have your wedding on an existing Glatt Kosher cruise or create a completely new cruises or venue depending on your requirements and wishes.

2. Planning the Destination

Kosherica has events throughout the world. We have had the most spectacular weddings as we set sail to the Caribbean, family reunions in Europe, Bar Mitzvahs in Alaska. The options are plentiful.

3. Who to invite?

Kosherica can arrange wonderful and affordable packages for big or small groups. Call us today so we can give you quotes.

Warm Up The Winter With Kosherica by Yochanan Gordon

Just a couple of weeks ago on a sunny Shabbos afternoon, I looked up at the sky and noticed a fleet of birds heading south. While at that moment in time I felt perfectly comfortable with the weather still in the high 60’s to the low 70’s, it seems that the birds begin to anticipate the frost of winter well before it actually arrives. Now, as we make our way into the month of November and then December, we will wake up day in and day out to a sheet of frost, perhaps even a little snow covering our car mirrors and windshields, at which point we wish that we could follow the seniors to their condos down south.

While most of us cannot get away for the entire winter season, for the week or so that we can, Kosherica is going to the Caribbean. In order to accommodate all of our disparate schedules, Kosherica is embarking on a total of five cruises, four of which leave on different dates, beginning with December 26 (which is nearly sold out), then on January 16, 2011, January 23, 2011 (one Norwegian and one with Celebrity Solstice), and finally an all new cruise on February 25, 2011.

The Kosherica family has been committed to excellence, setting new standards in both cruise and on-land getaways for over a decade and a half. Anyone who has traveled during that time with Kosherica is hard pressed to pinpoint exactly what about the overall experience they enjoyed most. Their constant attention to the details and their consideration to the thoughts and suggestions of their clientele continue to bolster and solidify their stellar reputation until this very day.

Offy Shifman, one of the founders of the Kosherica Company, said that Kosherica creates each tour vacation with their customers in mind. While most people would be satisfied with the basic amenities found aboard any of the world-class cruise liners, there are some who join to partake specifically in the intellectually stimulating lectures, symposiums, and workshops, or to enjoy a series of shiurim from world-renowned lecturers and orators in a laidback environment. It is precisely for this reason that Kosherica goes to great lengths in inviting new and exciting personalities on every getaway.

On that note, Offy was excited to inform me that they have just reached a deal with Alan Dershowitz who will join the January 16 cruise to the Caribbean. Alan Dershowitz is an American lawyer, jurist, political commentator, and Mid East Analyst. He has spent most of his career at Harvard University, where at the age of 28, he became the youngest full professor of law in its history. He is the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. Dershowitz is known for his career as an attorney in several high profile cases and as a commentator on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Dershowitz is sure to shed some keen commentary and profound insights and most importantly, truth, behind this dizzying dispute. Also joining Dershowitz as a scholar in residence is Rabbi Levi Shemtov of Washington, DC. Rabbi Shemtov has acted as a liaison of sorts carrying Jewish awareness to the White House. He is responsible for the famous Chanukah menorah lighting on Capitol Hill every year.

In addition, the January 16 cruise is Kosherica’s all famous Jewish music festival at sea featuring the Jewish world’s most exciting entertainers such as Avraham FriedDudu FisherLipa Schmeltzer, Cantors Chaim Adler, Ben Zion Miller, father and son Naftali and Netanel Hershtik, Yaakov Motzen, Yaakov Stark, and more. If you are an amateur singer looking to make inroads for yourself into the industry, the next “Kosherica Idol” competition is your opportunity to be heard by the most talented vocalists and musicians of our time.

Coinciding with the yeshiva midwinter break, Kosherica’s Eastern Caribbean seven night cruise embarks on January 23, 2011. The entertainment for this cruise features Cantors Yitzchak Meir Helfgot and Shlomo Simcha along with world renowned cantorial accompanist Daniel Gildar. Unique to this yeshiva break cruise, for a limited time only, is a starting rate of $1,299 as well as no charge for the third and fourth child cruisers. In addition the Norwegian Cruiseline Kid’s Crew has a program of activities to keep the little ones occupied; places to go and kids to meet. It’s like recess, only longer. Sleep-away camp, only better. Your children won’t get homesick, but they also won’t get underfoot. You can enjoy a massage while they’re on a treasure hunt. Play roulette while they’re camping out, or head for the chocoholic buffet while they’re having a pillow fight at a pajama party.

Every minute they spend in Kid’s Crew is carefully supervised by a staff of youth counselors from leading universities and organizations. Prior to coming aboard, they attend a special training course on team and confidence building, communication skills, safety, and working with children who have special needs. Together they’ve come up with an impressive bag of tricks for your kids.

There are circuses, crafts, parades, sports, games, stories, parties, as well as campouts with flashlights and tents. There is t-shirt painting, face painting, treasure hunts, and sand castle competitions on their private island. And even shore excursions designed just for families. Of course they promise they’ll give the children plenty of time to spend with their parents, too. Shoot some hoops at the basketball court. Take them to the magic show. Let junior beat you at table tennis. (Or maybe try hard not to.)

Take the whole gang bowling at the three-lane bowling alley at sea. Play a game of pick up on the sports deck. Play Wii™ on a two-story screen or a video game in the arcade room. Scale the huge rock climbing wall or play a game of darts, pool, or foosball. There’s always something going on for the entire family to enjoy and with this much to do, they’ll be begging for another hour before bed.

Leaving also on the January 23 is a cruise featuring scholar-in-residence Rabbi Eliezer Shusterman of Share Torah Congregation of Pittsburgh, PA. Rabbi Shusterman is a dynamic speaker who engages audiences of all ages and backgrounds speaking on topics from tefillah to Jewish mysticism as well as Judaism for beginners.

In addition to the amazing line up of cruises, Kosherica is proud to announce a stunning PASSOVER CRUISE from Miami to Los Angeles. Kosherica is also doing a world class Passover program at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach. Catering is by Prestige and under the strict supervision of the ORB. The whole hotel is Kosher for Passover.

Call 877 Sail Kosher, 305-695-2700 or visit www.kosherica.com to reserve your space today. If you have cruised before or been away for Pesach and you think you know what to expect, Kosherica has added many features to catch you off guard. If this is your first tour with Kosherica, be prepared for this to be the first of many.

Kosherica's 5 Steps to Picking Your Perfect Passover Hotel Program!

Once you've selected your passover destination, the next step is to choose your hotel. If you are particular about your hotel, you may need to pick your hotel before your destination or you might end up switching locations a couple of times. Play around with it and keep your options open. Many destinations are similar - white sandy beaches or mountain skiing - but your passover hotel will make all the difference. You will be spending a lot of time at the hotel or in your room, so do the research.

  1. Choose the location of your hotel. Do you want to be by an incredible golf course? In warm weather? This will narrow down your selection quiet a bit.
  2. How much can you spend? You may be surprised how affordable a Passover vacation can be when you factor that all meals, accommodations, activities and events are included in the price.
  3. What type of hotel do you want to stay out? Hotels can vary from couples-only, adult-only, all-inclusive, large resorts, small boutique hotels... We recommend a resort that has wonderful grounds to roam.
  4. What kind of room or suite do you imagine? You will be spending quality time in your hotel room, so keep this in mind when picking your hotel.
  5. Amenities? Hotel costs usually increase as the number of amenities increases. If you're planning on spending most of your time away from your hotel ~ sightseeing, shopping, excursions... then the number of amenities shouldn't be very important. If you don't want to leave your resort, then the amenities are key! Here is a list of important resort amenities to consider:
    o   Tea Room availability
    o   Concierge
    o   Golf center
    o   Fitness center
    o   Great Pool
    o   Live entertainment
    o   Kids Club
    o   Adult activities
    o   Quality food
    o   Spa ~ Massage
o   Access to main attractions in Coral Gables and Miami

Read on for more tips and insider info on what to do in Miami and Florida for Passover 2011 at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida!! 15% off until 11/30/10!!

Copenhagen Kosher Cruise a Success!

Copenhagen…As the executive chef of the five-star Dan Acadia in Herzliya, Ariel (“Arik”) Porat is already considered one of Israel’s leading kosher chefs. But earlier this month, Arik brought his mastery aboard the new Costa Deliziosa in a cruise to the Baltics, sponsored by Kosherica, a leader in the growing popularity of kosher cruises that include resident scholars and world-class entertainment. For the more than 200 vacationers (out of 2160 passengers), the 7-day cruise was also a week-long culinary experience, as it has been on many of the Kosherica cruises that featured Arik. Each evening, passengers in the elegant third floor hall dined on a five-course meal that included several choices of beef, poultry, and fish, much like those served in some of the finest hotels and restaurants. For Helit Edelstein of Kosherica, the logistical challenges of having a world-class chef of Porat’s reputation “is all part of the experience,” which on this particular cruise included Rabbi Stephen Riskin of Efrat and Cantor Yaakov Motzen.

The “challenges” also included recruiting reputable kosher supervisors and, of course, acquiring the best meats, fish and other ingredients for the world-class chef. Ofi Fishman, Helit’s brother, and a key player in planning the menus, prides himself on the quality of the baked goods that is prepared on board as well as the quality natural and fresh ingredients. While their acclaimed culinary delights have become almost routine, they still are busy “educating” the ship’s staff and most importantly catering to the needs of a “very sophisticated clientele” that on this particular cruise came from as far away as Melbourne and from such places as Gibraltar, Tel Aviv, Montreal, Toronto, London, and New York. Kosher industry sources say that kosher cruising has increased by more than 20% in the past five years, despite the recession. While some travelers still prefer going on a cruise with the cruise ship providing “kosher airline-like meals,” the trend is towards joining the total kosher experience that companies like Kosherica offer. David Wallace of Eddie’s Travel, which partnered with Kosherica for the kosher cruises, sees a growing number of kosher travelers opting for organized kosher travel to many destinations throughout the world. He is already joining Kosherica for Sukkot programs at the Dan Caesarea and Hacienda Forest View hotels in Israel and for many winter cruises in the Caribbean. As the kosher passengers disembarked in Copenhagen after visits to Tallinn, Estonia, Helsinki, Finland, St. Petersburg, Russia and Stockholm, Sweden, the talk was about “the experience” which meant the Kosherica program and, of course, the food of Arik.

A trek is a multi-day hike in the mountains.

Trekking means traveling light, being self-reliant, and respecting one's surroundings. Personal provisions are carried in a backpack and sleeping arrangements are in mountain lodges/hostels or in tents.

"Kosher" first and foremost means that meals and utensils are kasher and that Shabbat is observed. On another level , "kosher" frames the perspective and the particular trekking experience that is offered.

Kosherica Sets Sail to Baltic Capitals and Russia

When it comes to choosing a vacation, some travelers want to do nothing more than relax in the lap of luxury as they lounge on beach chairs and gaze at the ocean. Others look for a more interactive, educational package replete with historical site visits and learning about cultural traditions of their destination. And the kosher traveler, of course, wants to be assured that the food will not only be delicious but prepared and served according to the highest levels of kashrut. Kosherica, famous for combining all those aspects into their amazing kosher cruise vacation packages, will do so once again when it offers its weeklong sold out trip to the Baltic Capitals and Russia, August 8-15. The ship, which will leave and return from a port of call in Copenhagen, Denmark, will also offer CME medical credits in conjunction with New York Hospital.

Kosherica, a family-run organization, is the leader of glatt kosher cruises since 1992, with family members on every cruise to ensure the best and signature Kosherica quality possible.

Rabbi Dr. Shlomo Riskin will serve as scholar-in-residence. Rabbi Riskin has been a prominent figure in the Jewish community for over 30 years, and was the founding rabbi of the Lincoln Square Synagogue, known for its outreach to the community and social and educational programming, in Manhattan. He left New York to become a pioneer in the Israeli city of Efrat, and helped it become a flourishing town. Rabbi Riskin is gifted lecturer and a prolific writer on Israel, halacha, politics, and the Jewish people.

The ship, the Costa Deliziosa or “the new diamond of the fleet,” is a beautifully-decorated, fully-equipped luxury cruise ship with a grand spa and roomy cabins.

Offy Shifman, Kosherica’s Culinary Director, stated, "Kosherica is proud to present a five-star Baltic kosher cruise experience, complete with passage aboard a brand-new luxury ship; the best kosher chefs in the world cooking gourmet meals; private tours of Jewish interest; and a wonderful and stimulating scholar-in-residence and entertainment program.”

Yehuda Shifman, Co-Director of Kosherica Programming, added, “We are also excited to introduce our CME-accredited doctors program in conjunction with New York Hospital. It allows doctors to brush up on perfecting their craft while also being able to see the world."

The cruise leaves from a port in Copenhagen on Sunday night. Over the next week, it travels the Baltic seas with ports of call in Estonia; St. Petersburg, Russia; Helsinki, Finland; Stockholm, Sweden; and a return call to Copenhagen the next Sunday morning. Even though this sailing is sold out, Kosherica boasts the same schedule every year.

Those who wish to explore the land visits on their own are more than welcome to do so. There will be planned shore excursions for those who are interested in taking guided tours, including those of the Great Synagogue in St. Petersburg; the Hermitage Museum; majestic palace tour; a canal tour of Stockholm; and more.

Barry Segal, Co-Director of Kosherica Programming, said, "Our goal of every Kosherica cruise is to hear customers say, ‘This was the vacation of my dreams!'”

2010 Summer Cruising Takes Kosher Travel to a Whole New Level

Responding to the ever-increasing interest in top-quality kosher cruising, kosher travel operator Eddie’s Travel ( www.koshertravelers.com) has announced five kosher cruises scheduled for the summer of 2010. To be produced in cooperation with Kosherica, the leading organizer of kosher cruises since 1995, the 2010 line of offerings includes cruises headed for the Mediteranean, Alaska, the Baltics and Canada New England.

Each cruise will combine an exciting line-up of entertainers from the world of Jewish music with distinguished scholars in residence from Israel and the United States. The programs will be hosted on ultra-modern luxury cruise
liners from the top names in the industry including Celebrity, Holland American and Costa.

“The world of kosher cruising has witnessed a dramatic surge in recent years to become a vacation of choice for kosher-observant families and individuals from all over the world,” said David Walles, CEO of Israel-based Eddie’s Travel. “Our goal in designing the summer lineup is to present a variety of destinations and entertainment options to allow even more people to discover what sets kosher cruising apart.”

With food being one of the foremost criteria for what makes a vacation truly memorable, Eddie’s Travel has enlisted the services of one of Israel’s top chefs to supervise all on-board catering operations. Chef Arik Porat, Executive Chef at the five-star Dan Accadia Hotel in Herzliya supervises a large staff of talented culinary artists to prepare award winning meals cooked to top kosher standards. “We see our cruises as an occasion to show off how kosher food and wine can be truly extraordinary and we make every effort to ensure that the meals are ones that our guests will never forget,” Porat said.

Entertainment comes in a variety of forms, including music and lectures and the summer cruise season will attract some of Jewish world’s biggest names. Leaving from Copenhagen, Denmark, the August 8th seven day cruise to the Baltics will visit the picturesque ports of Estonia, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm. Guests will be inspired by Scholar in Residence Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Chief Rabbi of the City of Efrat and founding Rabbi of the Lincoln Square Synagogue and moved by the melodies of Cantor Yaakov Motzen.

While at port, the tour operators make sure to design day-trips that respond to the specific interests of their travelers including programs on Jewish heritage along with general interest. “The name of the game in cruising is to make it a comprehensive vacation where every possible taste and interest is being responded to without having to unpack the luggage each day,” says Walles. “In so doing, we’ve created a travel product that has customers heading home feeling truly rewarded, relaxed and happy with their vacation investment.”
